Adults 65+ with Influenza Vaccination

County: Montgomery
Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the percentage of adults aged 65 and older who received an influenza vaccination in the past year.

Why is this important?

Influenza is a contagious disease caused by the influenza virus. The flu can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications particularly in older people, young children, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions. It can lead to pneumonia and can be dangerous for people with heart or breathing conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in the United States, 5% to 20% of the population on average gets the flu and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year. While flu seasons can vary in severity, during most seasons, people 65 years and older bear the greatest burden of severe flu disease and have the highest flu-related mortality. The seasonal influenza vaccine can prevent serious illness and death. The CDC recommends annual vaccinations to prevent the spread of influenza.
