Age-Adjusted Death Rate due to Cervical Cancer

County: Montgomery
Measurement Period: 2018-2022
This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 females due to cervical cancer.

Why is this important?

Cervical cancer forms in tissues of the cervix (the organ that connects the uterus and vagina) and is slow-growing. Deaths due to cervical cancer have been declining since the 1970s, largely thanks to screening methods. Cervical cancer that is detected early is one of the most successfully treatable cancers, and can be cured by removing or destroying the pre-cancerous or cancerous tissue. Cervical cancer is detected by Pap test screenings and is most often caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a type of infection transmitted through sexual contact and can lead to cervical cancer. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that all women aged 21-29 have a Pap test every 3 years while women aged 30-65 should have a Pap test and an HPV test every 5 years or a Pap test alone every 3 years.
